The Pathways of Punta Gorda know how to pamper people and pets.
I've come to Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda. Both the Harborwalk and the Linear Park starts here - a wide paved Pathway with great amenities like shade trees, dog stations, benches for breaks and even a two-tiered water station - one high up for people plus and a ground level water fountain just right for Obi my Welsh Corgi.
I chat with friendly dog owners and hear about a nearby dog park called Hounds on Henry. We walk that way. I remember to do the dog safety drill before entering:
Are the dog owners inside well behaved?
Are they paying attention to their dogs?
Is everyone happy and not aggressive?
The answers today are Yes, Yes and Yes. In we go.
All that fun means lunch is next on the menu. Today the choice is Peace River Seafood in Punta Gorda. Dogs are welcome on the large covered patio area.
A cooling breeze blows nicely. Our waitress brings water for Obi, tea for me. Lunch arrives. Obi turns on his full wattage laser look. Food? Where is my share? Resistance is futile.
Early one morning Obi, who has a nose for a good time, sniffs out Ann Dever Memorial Regional Park in Englewood. The dog park has a huge area for large dogs, plus a small dog area and a separate agility course area.
Dogs really enjoy running free of leads. I would not be surprised to hear a boom box playing "Born Free."
Next we find nearby Cape Haze Pioneer Trail Park in Rotonda, a wide paved pathway favored by bicycles, and a good place for an early morning dog walk.
With so much fun to sniff out in Charlotte County, the dog parks, don-friendly park areas and Pathways, I think Obi and I should plan to do an overnight soon. Here are two suggestions:
Four Points by Sheraton Punta Gorda Harborside is pet friendly with a one-time charge of $25. The second floor is reserved for pets and owners. Punta Gorda Harborwalk, a Pathway that is pet, bicycle and pedestrian friendly, goes right by Four Points.
The Wyvern Hotel in Punta Gorda is pet friendly with the same $25 one-time fee and the second floor is the designated place to stay. The hotel sits one block away from Harborwalk and the Laishley Marina.
