Charlotte Harbor VCB Tourism Director Becky Bovell Displays the Henry Earlier this week, staff from the Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau attended the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism. Much to our surprise, one of our marketing campaigns took home the coveted Henry during the 2010 Flagler Awards Dinner! To say we are excited and surprised is an understatement. Read the following media release distributed yesterday regarding the award. The Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau has received the state of Florida’s top tourism marketing achievement, a "Henry" for its 2009 ECOnomical Summer Escapes Campaign. The campaign won Best of Show for Marketing Budgets Less than $100,000 and was a finalist for the competition's Mixed Media Campaign category during the Flagler Awards Dinner presented by VISIT FLORIDA and the Florida Commission on Tourism. The award was presented Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, during the 2010 Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism at the Epcot World ShowPlace Pavilion. "Flagler Awards are among the most competitive awards in the Florida tourism industry, and we are extremely proud to have been selected for this prestigious honor," said Becky Bovell, Director for the Bureau, "It is particularly gratifying for a smaller bureau to be recognized for production of high quality materials which rival those from bureaus with significantly larger budgets, staff and resources." ECOnomical Summer Escapes was introduced in 2009 with the goal of raising awareness and encouraging visitors to vacation in Charlotte County during the summer. The program included radio promotions in key Florida feeder markets as well as those serviced by Direct Air and Allegiant Air, online promotions, and a 'Stay Two Nights, Get the Third Free' promotion in local hotels. Through partnerships with area tourism businesses and airlines who donated hotel stays, attraction passes, restaurant vouchers and flights, the campaign was an inexpensive way to promote and encourage summer visitation to the area. The marketing campaign was coordinated between the Bureau and SMITH, the VCB's advertising and marketing agency. Building on 2009's success, ECOnomical Summer Escapes returned for the 2010 summer season. The marketing campaign has received a Gold ADDY Award by the Suncoast American Advertising Federation and a Bronze Adrian Award from Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) earlier this year. The Flagler Awards are presented annually by VISIT FLORIDA and recognize outstanding tourism marketing achievements of Florida’s tourism industry partners, including travel businesses, destinations and attractions.  The awards are named after business tycoon, railroad developer and tourism visionary Henry Flagler, and are referred to as the "Henry." Tourism is one of Charlotte County’s strongest revenue producers, providing an "imported" source of funds for the Charlotte economy. Tourism supports over 6,000 jobs, generates sales tax revenues of nearly $19 million and produces over $313 million in total expenditures. Nearly 300,000 visitors travel to Charlotte County annually.
