Paddlers from Across Florida Will Battle it Out for Charity During
3rd Annual Punta Gorda Dragon Boat Festival

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (March 07, 2013) – Paddlers from across the Sunshine State will battle it out during War on the Peace in Punta Gorda, Fla., on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Racing begins at 9 a.m. About 650 Dragon Boat paddlers from across Florida will participate in the 3rdAnnual Punta Gorda Dragon Boat Festival in Laishley Park. Sponsored by the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce and Charlotte Harbor Paddlers (www.charlotteharborpaddlers.com), this amateur racing event is an official Southeastern Regional Dragon Boat Association (SRDBA) points race and perfect opportunity for teams to prepare for the 10thAnnual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Festival on April 27. Local breast cancer survivors have formed a crew to join survivor teams from Miami and Tampa. Other breast cancer survivors interested in participating can contact Alice Walker at joeal36@yahoo.com.
The 2012 event attracted more than 2,000 visitors to the destination with 29 teams and 650 competitors participating. This year promises to attract more competitors and spectators.
Dragon boating is a co-ed team sport. Twenty people paddle the 40-foot-long dragon boat 400 meters (just less than a quarter mile) in about two and a half minutes, plus one person is the steerer and another person is a drummer for a total of 22 people in a boat.

The Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce challenges teams to compete and raise funds for a charity of their choice. All that is needed to participate are 22 coworkers, good friends or fellow students. Included in the entry fee are two practices, each of one hour length in the week before the race. Then on Saturday the team is ready to compete.
